Introducing Taatya: our bundle of joy!!!

January 30 , 2009

Pardon me for composing this entry a little too late and keeping all my readers waiting anxiously. But the delay was inevitable. Esha and I, were blessed with a baby boy on January 19th 2009 at precisely 3 PM. We have named him Taatya. It is read as तात्या in Hindi and means “Lord Shiva”.

The doctors had pronounced February 15th as the due date but due to certain peculiar medical complications, we had to get Esha operated 27 days ahead of schedule. The C-section went on well and Taatya cried soon after he was born which was a good news for us. While Esha was recovering from the effect of the anaesthesia, we learnt that since he was premature, Taatya had developed some respiratory distress and was having difficulty in breathing. The doctors put him on ventilator and he responded positively to it. We didn’t know the seriousness of the issue at that time.

By midnight, Taatya’s condition deteriorated and oxygen levels in his body dropped to an alarming level. That’s when we realised it wasn’t as simple as we had initially thought. An emergency decision was made and he was rushed to another hospital immediately. While all this was happening, Esha wasn’t told about any of this. I told her about it (only after drastically hiding the gravity of the situation) the following morning.

Esha was discharged from the hospital on January 22nd. But Taatya was kept under life support systems inside a nursery for 7 days as he gradually recovered and got accustomed to the natural environment. On January 27th, the doctors decided to introduced the baby to Esha and she was also brought to the same hospital as Taatya. They spent two days together in the hospital’s room without any special support system but still under observation. Finally, yesterday, on January 29th, they both were discharged from the hospital.

It was a tough time for us. Specially for Esha since she had not even seen Taatya until she was moved in-to his hospital room. Any mother would understand how difficult it is. But I am grateful to her for the tremendous courage that she exhibited during one of the toughest times of our life.

All is well that ends well. Both Esha and Taatya are doing quite well now and we have just begun enjoying parenting…
