Charge your laptop without wires
August 25 , 2008
Not long ago, when I announced the SneezeNergy project, I got lot people saying it was crazy and stupid and what not. I agree to every bit of that! It was just a wild idea that I exaggerated a little too much. With a little bit of scientific extrapolation, it seemed like a good candidate for an April fool's joke.
Here is another sci-fi story. You could soon be charging your laptops by just coming in the vicinity of a wireless power distributor. Just like the way we use internet through WiFi hotspots. This one is not a joke.
Intel (in partnership with MIT) has come up with a technology that allows power to be distributed wirelessly. While it will be more appealing if this extended to devices like cellphones or PDAs, Intel is putting its money on developing this for Laptop computers to start with. A web search suggested that this is not a new phenomenon (unlike SneezeNergy!). Scientists have been working on this since late 19th century.
I am waiting for this tech to become mainstream. There are already a couple of companies in this space. WiPower for example, has products that can charge your devices over a wireless media. With someone as mighty as Intel putting money on it, I am very positive of this thing seeing light of reality pretty soon.
BTW, any takers for SneezeNergy? I think I should get a patent on it!
